Mountain Ash Lake Fire Tower
North of Aubrey Falls
(GPS: 47.0657 83.2361)
There are at least two ways to access the Mountain Ash Lake Fire Tower. The first, and easiest is going in from Highway 129, where the turnoff is approximately 30 km north of the Aubrey Falls Trading Post. You take the Mountain Ash Lake road west off of Highway 129, go past Mountain Ash Lake and in doing so, you will see the tower in the background on the hilltop. Click 'The Map' for a visual of the routes.
The 2nd route (ATV or snowmobile only) is by coming in from the Aubinadong River which is west of the tower. You would initially start at the Ranger Lake road and Domtar junction, then go north and catch the East Aubinadong River turnoff and continue north-east along the Aubinadong. You will arrive at a river crossing where there is no bridge (bridge was removed a few years back) and will need to cross the river. The water was approximately 14" deep when we crossed and there is a current, so you need to make sure you have momentum otherwise you may be going down the river. Once on the other side, continue north along the east side of the river and eventually will come to a fork in the road, of which you will take the right branch which will turn into a trail. This trail turns easterly, then south-easterly along a very long swamp. This leads through to Mountain Ash lake of which you will go by the tower turnoff. A very scenic route and if you have the opportunity to travel it someday, I highly recommend it for the beauty and solitude. To see our Aubinadong River Winter Trip click >here<
